The Jouflas Family has owned and ranched this land since 1926. Peter Jouflas was among the first Greek immigrants to arrive in western Colorado. It was the early 1900's and the family was in search of grazing land for their sheep. In order to supplement their income, some ventured into additional business including shoeshine shops, restaurants, and theatres throughout western Colorado. The ranch in Wolcott, which now constitutes the majority of the community of Red Sky Ranch, was purchased in 1926. Some say that the mountains of Colorado must have reminded these families of the mountains in their homelands of central Greece. The rich Greek Orthodox culture was faithfully carried into their new homeland, where arranged marriages were week-long celebrations, and children were raised with integrity, respect and religious ethics.
Today, Peter's son, George Jouflas is 78 years old, and continues to live in the area along with a handful of family members. He has since retired from the rigors of ranching life and even carries a cell phone. The colorful threads of his Greek heritage, however, still dominate the fabric of his life. Having had a hand in establishing the community of Wolcott, it is important to the Jouflas family that the growth of the area be carefully managed. Vail Resorts Development Company has worked closely with the Jouflas' and other neighbors in creating a common vision for the enjoyment of this special area by more families.
